Referring to U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks in Doha that India had agreed to “zero tariffs”, the Congress on Thursday (May 15, 2025) questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the subject.
In a post on social media platform X, Congress’s communications chief Jairam Ramesh asked what linked the trade policy to Operation Sindoor.
“The Commerce Minister is in Washington DC and President Trump has made yet another grand announcement from Doha. There is total chuppi [silence] from our PM. What has he agreed to and what linkage is there between this and the stoppage of Operation Sindoor?” Mr. Ramesh said in a post on X.

The Congress leader also tagged a report quoting Mr. Trump that India had offered “zero tariffs” on several American goods as part of its trade deal with the United States.
“India is one of the highest tariff nations in the world. It is very hard to sell into India. They have offered us a deal where basically they are willing to — literally — they charge us no tariff. We go from the highest tariff — you could not do business in India, we are not even in the top 30 in India because the tariff is so high — to a point where they have actually told us that there will be no tariff,” Mr. Trump said in Doha.
The American President’s comment comes amid Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to the U.S. to hold talks for finalising a trade deal with the United States.
