Chris Brown Arrested in Manchester Over Alleged 2023 Nightclub Bottle Attack

R&B star Chris Brown was arrested in the early hours of Thursday, May 15, at a luxury hotel in Manchester, England, in connection with an alleged violent nightclub incident that took place two years ago in London.

According to The Independent, the 36-year-old singer was taken into custody by Metropolitan Police at the upscale Lowry Hotel in Salford, just hours after landing in the UK via private jet. Authorities confirmed that a man matching Brown’s description was arrested at 2 a.m. on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH).

The incident in question dates back to February 19, 2023, when music producer Abraham Diaw claimed Brown assaulted him at London’s Tape nightclub. Diaw alleges that the artist struck him multiple times over the head with a bottle and then kicked him while he was on the ground. He later filed a $16 million civil lawsuit seeking damages for physical injuries and financial losses.

While police have not officially named Brown, standard procedure in the UK, a statement from authorities reads:

“A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 2am on Thursday, May 15, on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He remains in custody. The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on February 19, 2023.”

As of now, neither Chris Brown nor his representatives have publicly responded to the arrest or the allegations.

A Troubled History of Violence

Brown’s latest run-in with the law adds to a long list of legal troubles that have followed the performer throughout his career. He infamously assaulted then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009, resulting in felony charges that led to visa denials and tour cancellations, including in the UK.

Subsequent incidents include:

  • A 2012 nightclub brawl with rapper Drake in New York
  • A 2013 altercation with Frank Ocean over a parking space
  • A 2013 felony assault arrest in Washington, D.C., leading to jail time
  • A 2015 alleged basketball court assault in Las Vegas
  • A 2016 arrest on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon at his California home
  • A 2017 restraining order filed by ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran
  • A civil lawsuit involving a violent incident after a concert in Fort Worth, Texas

Upcoming Tour Plans in Limbo

Chris Brown is scheduled to kick off the European leg of his Breezy Bowl XX Tour on June 8 at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruijff Arena. However, it remains unclear whether his recent arrest will impact his upcoming performances, particularly the UK tour dates.

As of press time, Brown’s legal status and whether he remains in custody have not been confirmed. The Metropolitan Police have yet to release further details, and the singer has not addressed the arrest on his social media platforms.
