The fans made their votes heard and a new champion has been named for Season 23 of “American Idol.” Viewers voted Jamal Roberts as the winner in the May 18 episode.
“From my first step on that stage to this unbelievable moment, I never dreamed a kid from my hometown would one day be called American Idol,” Roberts said in a social media post. “This journey has been bigger than me, and I’m so grateful for every person who believed in me when I was just chasing a dream.”

Who is Jamal Roberts, winner of ‘American Idol’?
Roberts, 27, is a phys ed teacher at Crestwood Elementary in Mississippi, his hometown news reported. He won a golden ticket singing “Mary Jane” by Rick James in audition rounds, and previously honed his skills singing covers on TikTok.

John Foster and Breanna Nix were the runners-up.
Who performed on ‘American Idol’ season finale?
Roberts sang “Her Heart” by Anthony Hamilton as his winners song. Roberts also performed with Jelly Roll while Foster sang with Luke Bryan and Nix with Brandon Lake.
Other performances included other top 14 artists along with Jessica Simpson, Salt-N-Pepa and Good Charlotte.

Will there be another season of ‘American Idol’?
“American Idol” has been renewed for another season, which will mark Season 24, to debut in 2026.
Whether or not the same judges will return is another story.
“We haven’t started talks with the show on my return, so we’ll hear what the direction is,” Bryan said, according to USA TODAY, adding, “Me and Ryan and Lionel have been here for eight years.”
Carrie Underwood also said, “I feel like there’s a lot of contemplating and things like that to do, but I had a lot of fun. You never know where the good Lord’s going to take me, but I’m glad I’m here.”
